Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, occur when the tissues lining the sinuses become swollen and inflamed, interfering with mucus drainage. Children are more prone to them than adults are since their sinuses are not yet fully developed. At Spartanburg-Greer ENT & Allergy, our team of empathetic providers will help your child find relief from their symptoms so they can better enjoy their favorite activities.

Does My Child Have Sinusitis?

Symptoms of pediatric sinusitis include:

  • Cold symptoms that last longer than 10 days
  • Fever
  • Yellow or green nasal drainage for at least three days
  • Swelling in the area around the eyes
  • Headache
  • Irritability or excessive sleepiness

Acute Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis typically lasts 10 days or less and can be the result of bacteria, viruses or allergies.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis lasts longer than 12 weeks and is often the result of prolonged inflammation.

How Is Pediatric Sinusitis Diagnosed and Treated?

Because sinusitis can cause symptoms also found in allergies and colds, an accurate diagnosis is important. During your child’s appointment, our otolaryngologist may ask about:

  • What symptoms they are experiencing
  • How long they’ve lasted
  • The impact they’ve had on daily activities
  • Health history

Along with examining your child’s ears, nose and throat, our provider may also order a CT scan to determine if there are physical obstructions of the sinuses.

Acute sinusitis typically resolves on its own, and decongestants and saline sprays can be used to manage symptoms. Depending on the cause of sinusitis, your child’s doctor may prescribe antibiotics.

Children with chronic sinusitis that does not respond to medication may require surgery. Surgical options include:

  • Removal of adenoid tissue, or adenoidectomy
  • Widening of the nasal passages through endoscopic sinus surgery

If surgery is necessary, our ENT will answer any questions your family has and make sure your child feels safe.

Whether your child is experiencing acute or chronic sinusitis, our team at Spartanburg-Greer ENT & Allergy will partner with your family to help them find relief. Uncomfortable symptoms don’t have to be a consistent part of their life.
